Clinical Governance is an essential component of the NHS quality system introduced in 1997 as a result of the Department of Health’s white paper ‘A First-Class Service’, which placed a new duty of quality on all health organisations in the UK. It is potentially a powerful mechanism for ensuring that high standards of clinical care are maintained throughout the country, and that the quality of the NHS services is continuously improved.
