Moving and Handling

Course Overview

A recent report released by the Office for National Statistics has revealed that 30.6 million days were lost due to musculoskeletal problems in 2013. Back injury is the main reason for absence from the workplace and one third reported injuries that result in three days off work are caused by manual handling accidents. In the NHS the situation is even more serious, with this type of accident accounting for 40% of all sickness absence, at an estimated cost of £400 million each year. Around 5000 moving and handling injuries are reported each year in health services and around 2000 in social care. Aims: to ensure the learner is working to current moving and handling guidelines, alleviate any poor techniques that they may have adopted and minimise the risk of injury to themselves.

  • Explain the theory behind moving and handling

  • Demonstrate safe practice using a range of techniques when moving a variety of inanimate loads
