Course Overview
This course aims to provide the knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the veins and the techniques required for safe and effective venepuncture for the process of blood sampling.SUMMARYAccording to Seigworth (1980), the process of removing blood from the veins is believed to date back as far as 1400 B.C. , where an Egyptian tomb painting shows a leech being applied to the skin of a sick person. During ancient times, removing blood from the body was not a science, but used as a way to rid the body of illness or “evil spirits”. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that the use of the safer and effective needle and syringe system became commonplace for drawing blood. According to a 1990 article from Clin Chem journal, "the introduction of disposable needles and evacuated tube collection systems represented a substantial progress".
